US OPEN in Huntington Beach on July 20 – 28
Every summer Huntington Beach sponsors the US OPEN Surfing competition and it lasts for one week including two entire weekends. There are so many people that you are walking shoulder to shoulder through downtown Huntington Beach, along the pier and the beaches are so packed that you can barely find a spot big enough to sit. I always make it down there every year for at least an hour or so to walk around and “people watch.”
This year I brought Molly with me but I went during the week day when it wasn’t as crowded as the weekend. I have a friend who lives about a ten minute walk from the main strip and pier so I can find parking at his place and enjoy a short walk to the main attractions.
As the surfing died down on Sunday, July 28, a riot broke out in the streets of Huntington. Some local news reports suggest that a fight was the spark of the riot; others suspect that the fighting stemmed from the rioting. Either way, the crowd started tipping over portapotties, tearing down street signs, and even smashing their way into a bike shop and looting. The police were quick to arrive on the scene, and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. By dark, the streets were quiet, and eight arrests were made for charges like disturbing the peace, unlawful assembly, and inciting a riot.
